About Smart
Card

Smart Card is a credit card
sized plastic card embedded with either a microprocessor
and a memory chip or only a memory chip with
nonprogrammable logic. The ability of the microprocessor
to exchange information and carry out mathematical and
logical iterations of data provides the much vouched
"smartness" to the Smart Card. Smart Cards are of four
types viz. |

CONTACT CARD
Chip on the card, information exchanged is through
physical contact of the card and the card reader.

CONTACTLESS CARD
Chip inside the cards, information exchanged is
based on principles of radio frequency by flashing the
card in front of the card reader.

HYBRID CARD
Chip on and inside the card, information exchange is
by both physical contact with the card reader as well as
by flashing the card in front of the card reader.

MEMORY CARD
Plain and secured, information exchange is on the
principles of the Contact cards.
Smart Card with their
inherent capabilities, to store and iterate data are
used for a wide variety of applications and can function
in standalone or distributed environment. Smart Cards
can be used for simple applications requiring plain data
storage and can also cater to the needs of complex
applications with encryption/decryption. |
